Education and timetables

Starting 1 September, the University will resume on-campus teaching as much as possible, and in-person teaching will become the norm.

The principles of education in the first semester of 2021-2022

On-campus education forms the basis and students can only opt for online education on the basis of reasons related to COVID-19 (we will not stream all lectures, online education can also consist of individual instructions or assignments). In addition, online education will be used for lectures with more than 75 students.

Only for those who cannot come to campus due to reasons related to COVID-19, there will be other forms of education available; all other students are expected to be on campus for in-person education.

  1. Lecturers will not teach the same lecture twice for an online and for a physical audience. As for seminars in parallel groups, some lectures can exclusively be taught in an online form.
  2. The other forms of education will mainly be hybrid or will consist of web lectures and knowledge clips; this might be experienced as second best.

  3. The other forms of education are limited to the following students (limitative listing):
  • positive COVID-19 test;
  • lives with a person with a positive COVID-19 test;
  • has to quarantine due to measures by the government;
  • belongs to a risk group;
  • is unable to travel to the Netherlands or must first spend a period in quarantine, due to regulations on international traveling;

The above-mentioned reasons may, of course, also apply to lecturers. In that case, they will have to temporarily offer their education online.

Student attendance

Education for students who cannot come to campus due to COVID-19

We also have to take into account that a number of students, especially at the beginning of the semester, might not be able to be (immediately) present on campus due to reasons related to COVID-19 (international students with travel issues, risk groups, quarantine measures). They can report their absence via a new Brightspace tool.

For these students, different (second best) forms of education will be available, where possible, with which they can follow courses. For a number of study activities, such as laboratory practicals, this is naturally not possible, just as in times of COVID-19.

Procedure for alternative education for vulnerable groups

The procedure is as follows:

  • Student reports to the study coordinator, who assesses whether an application to Fenestra is useful/possible (according to university guidelines: RIVM risk group/quarantine measures/travel restrictions).
  • Student contacts Fenestra and makes an appointment for an interview with a student counsellor.
  • Fenestra sends statement to study coordinator and functional mailbox of the examination boards. 
  • Study coordinator informs involved lecturers that - where possible - an alternative to on-campus education will be organised for involved student.
  • Study coordinator reminds student to contact lecturers him/herself.
  • Lecturers are mandated by the board of examiners to offer the student the alternative 'second-best' education.
  • The lecturer informs the examination board and the study coordinator of the arrangements made with the student.
  • If the lecturer has strong doubts about whether the student can meet the final attainment levels/learning objectives, the lecturer will first contact the examination board before making any arrangements with the student.

Students with care responsibilities for someone who, for medical reasons, is not well protected by the vaccination, can also go to Fenestra if they find it too risky to come to the campus. For this group too, the education offered will be tailor-made. The study coordinator and lecturers can look at what the best advice is for the student: for one subject, following (second best) education is a solution, for another subject, postponement may be a better option (if a subject requires a lot of participation). 

Now that we have reached the period in which the lectures have started and not all students have a statement from Fenestra yet, we ask the study programme to be lenient.


Lectures with a maximum of 75 students

Lectures with a maximum of 75 students and all seminars will be taught on campus. Online elements, such as knowledge clips or tutorials that were recorded during the year of COVID-19, can be used to support in-person education.

Lectures with more than 75 students

Lectures that pose no scheduling conflicts with seminars can be (partially or not) taught online. There are various options:

  • Lectures take place live on campus, but are streamed for students who are not present. The lecturer will make sure that there are no more than 75 students present in the room (via, for example, Brightspace, you can communicate about which groups are allowed to come). Lecturers with lectures with more than 75 student will receive a separate email about this.
  • Lectures take place live, online for the entire group (in Kaltura, MSTeams or Zoom). Lecturers will have to organise sufficient interactive response moments.
  • Groups from 75 to 150 students can be split into two groups, where every other week one group is taught on campus. The lecture is also livestreamed and/or recorded for the students at home.
  • Prior to a lecture, the lecturer makes previously recorded video lectures or knowledge clips available to the students. In addition, live online lectures have to take place that act as interactive Q&A sessions or discussions about these materials.

Please note: Problems may occur in regards to online lectures when students have a seminar on campus immediately afterwards. In that case, it is best to record the lectures. If students need the knowledge of the lecture prior to the seminar, it is preferable to make the recordings available the day before the scheduled seminar. This can be done via weblectures that are made available in Brightspace. It is preferable to record the lectures with Kaltura Capture.

If you want to record a lecture in the classroom as a weblecture, that is also possible. Please inform a staff member of ECOLe of this in time. It is only possible to record the first lecture as a weblecture in the week before the start of the semester.

Timetable for block 1 of the first semester 2021-2022

The timetable for the first semester takes account of the new guidelines for teaching after 1 September. This means there is an on-campus timetable for groups of up to 75 students at the original time slots (9-11 hrs, 11-13 hrs, etc.). All the rooms for these have now been reserved.

Objections to teaching on campus?

The aim is to offer students mainly on-campus education. Only lectures for more than 75 students may be offered entirely online. The university does everything in its power to keep on campus education safe. If, as a lecturer, you have objections to teaching on location, please discuss this with your supervisor. Providing a course exclusively online is only possible with the approval of your supervisor, Programme Director and vice deans.
