We would like to remind you again that any exams that make use of Remindo and/or online proctoring should be requested at least 3 weeks in advance. If you would like to make use of these options, please send this request form to email@example.com and we will help you set up your exam. Note that you need to request exams for the finals week, starting at 14 December, by Monday 23 November. How do you run your hybrid teaching smoothly? How do you motivate or stimulate students to interact in class?Are you teaching hybrid at the moment or are you planning to do so in the first semester? We would like to invite you to the informal intervision Hybrid coffee sessions to share experiences about hybrid teaching with other humanities colleagues.
The team Onderwijs & Kwaliteitszorg (O&K) organizes the hybrid coffee sessions every Tuesday from 10.00-11.00. The online meeting is practical and supports your hybrid teaching. There is enough space for input from every teacher. You participate through MSTeams (link) and you can participate once or more often.
We would like you to share your experiences during the session. Everyone can bring up questions about hybrid education. The most urgent case will have more attention. Questions could be: When I’m teaching the students in the room, how do I involve the students online? How do I change the setup of my lecture do make sure every student is on the same page? How do I know when the students have obtained the knowledge?
The session offers no technical support during your lecture or tutorial, but the session could help you to adjust your own education to the new hybrid situation in a practical way when you prepare for your lecture.

Whilst Kaltura Live Room remains the main tool for online education MS Teams has risen to the occasion as well as a great back-up tool. Therefore, we have updated the Ms Teams manual and added an overview of useful tutorials that can help you set up Ms Teams for your online education.

Will you teach lectures or seminars on campus this semester? Chances are you will also have to teach your class online for students who are unable to attend classes due to health issues or travel restrictions. This 'hybrid' education can easily be facilitated by livestreaming your class to your online students.
Check out our guide on hybrid education to get step-by-step instructions on how to set it up and an overview off the tools you can pick to live stream your lecture. Some tips in advance:
- Pick up your webcam for your lecture at the Servicedesk (There will be enough webcams available. They cannot be reserved).
- There is no ‘Leids kwartiertje’ – your class will start on time as indicated in the schedule.
- You place the webcam on the tripod and plug the webcam into the PC in the lecture hall (or into your laptop). Then switch on the beamer. This way, when you open your PPT in Kaltura (or in Teams or Live Events), it will be visible both for the attendees on campus and online participants.
- The webcam usually only records the teacher, but can also be turned towards the classroom when you start an interactive part. The integrated microphone picks up not only your voice, but also the questions from your students in the room. Online participants will be able to hear them (this is true for workgroup rooms, in large lecture halls you will have to repeat the question).
- In case of technical problems, call the AV service (#6529). For problems with the webinar tool, call ECOLe (#2773).
- Let online participants use the 'raise hand' function if they want to speak.
- After class, please bring the webcam set back to the service desk!
Test the hybrid education set-up

Which hybrid formats can you use? We were asked whether it is possible to organize classes in which two groups of students come in after each other to both attend an hour of a lecture. This is not possible because of the Campus Protocol. Students enter the classroom and are allowed to stay there for a maximum of 4 hours. After that the classroom will be cleaned. In the meantime, no other group is allowed in (because group 2 will then come into contact with the viruses of group 1).
What is possible, for example, is: letting students come to Leiden every other week. While 50% is present in the room, the other 50% participate from home. An online student could help moderate the chat if a large group of students is present online.
Alternatively, you could offer online and on-campus students a lecture for 60 minutes, followed by another 30 minutes of face-to-face conversations with online students only. In the meantime, on campus students can work on an assignment of their own. You may also use your room for four hours (if it is available) and put students to work on their own or give one-on-one tutoring.
You can decide on how you want to use your assigned time slot. The rule is: as long as students don't leave the room, hang around and then come back in, or other students come in, you can set it up however you like. The faculty does not determine which forms of work lecturers 'should' choose and you have flexibility as long as you adhere to the Campus protocol. Of course, you may also end your lecture after the regular two hours. In some cases, the room will be empty after that. Students can stay in the room if they want to.

Today all teachers of the Faculty of Humanities have received a Guide to Online Teaching that has been delivered to your home. This guide aims to provide you with all the necessary information to host your education in online teaching. An online version has been added to Useful Links on this page. Make sure to check it out!
Unfortunately it was not possible to add co-teachers to Brightspace courses during the migration. If you teach a course with one or more other teachers we kindly ask you to enroll them yourself.
You can do so as follows:
- Go to your module in Brightspace.
- Click on Course Tools -> Classlist -> Add participants ->Add existing users.
- Fill in the name or login name of your colleague.
- Press Enter.
- Check the right person from the list.
- Select the role Instructor or Assistant-Instructor.
- Click on Enroll Selected Users.
- Click on Done.
The 'Hybrid Teaching' page has been updated. Are some students unable to join your on-campus classes? Pick up a webcam from the Lipsius reception before class and choose one of the available tools to host your class both offline and online.

When: Thursday 6 August 11:00-13:00 Where: Kaltura Live Room (you will reveice the link after signing up) This interactive online workshop will teach you how to use Remindo, the test application of our faculty, to set up weekly assignments. Weekly assignments keep your students engaged with the material at home and can also serve as great practice material for students to study for exams. During the workshop you will learn how to set up a question database and how to generate your test using your question bank. You will then be able to practice and apply what you have learned during break-out sessions.Sign up
Options for on-campus teaching will be expanded next semester. One of these options will likely be a form of hybrid education, where some classes will be provided online and on campus simultaneously. This means that students who are unable to come to the university will still be able to attend classes.
ECOLe is working on setting up support for hybrid education for next semester. We will inform you as soon as the plans for hybrid education at our faculty are finalised.

At the present time, online proctoring is being used university-wide for around 13% of the exams. Most students are unfamiliar with this form of surveillance and we are noticing that it is causing some unrest among students. They are concerned about privacy or whether their exam results will be negatively impacted by the pressure they experience. To dispel this unrest, or - even better - to prevent it, and to give them a better understanding of online proctoring, at the beginning of May an email was sent to students on this subject. Teaching staff may find it useful to refer students to this email.

uMail has been updated to a new software environment. Due to this update, any automatic forwarding from a student’s uMail account to their personal account is no longer active. This means any email messages you send via Blackboard or Brightspace, for example, are not automatically sent to their personal email account. This might hinder communications with your students as they may not be aware of this issue. Please inform them on what they need to do to re-activate the forward, for example during a lecture. You can refer to this guide.
Extra security step
From 22 April, you will no longer be able to log in to Teams, Office 365, OneDrive and Skype for Business with your ULCN account alone, but you will need to go through an extra security step. You will have to verify your identity with Microsoft Authenticator.

Declaration of originality
To make students extra aware of our rules regarding fraud and plagiarism, a decleration of originality has been made for students (see document on the right, also in Dutch).
The decleration helps confirm and strengthen the standards that apply at our university. Students take tests and make assignments themselves, without plagiarism. By including the decleration in the test, the student is reminded that he or she should not cheat, but also that other students should not do so. Behavioral research shows that endorsing a decleration of originality just before an exam or assignment works best. Also included in the decleration is the fact that students have to realise that fraud may also harm other students. It is recommended to make students aware of this outside the assessment and to point out their responsibility in this respect.
