Data analysis software
Data analysis is the process of converting raw data into information that can be used to answer research questions. To help you interpret your raw data SOLO Research and Lab Support supports different types of data analysis software.
Staff members can install the software on their own computer through the Software Center or apply for the software at the ISSC. Students can make use of most of this software in the FSW Data Analysis Room 1B02.
Room 1B02 is a small computer room with 5 computers. The computers are exclusively meant for using specialized data analysis software (not SPSS or R). These computers can be used by researchers and students. A computer needs to be reserved on our reservations website.

Local ExperimentData folder
Because working from a network drive (e.g. J: or P:) can negatively impact the computer’s performance and working from an external hard disk is not advised due to privacy regulations, users can use the local ExperimentData folder. This folder is accessible via the Desktop shortcut or via C:\Users\[ulcn name]\ExperimentData.
When using the Experiment Data folder, be aware of the following:
- The ExperimentData folder is a local folder on the computer. Data stored in this folder can only be accessed on that particular computer in 1B02.
- No backup is being made. The data should be backed up to a network drive (e.g. J: or P:) at the end of the day.
- The ExperimentData folder including all data will be automatically deleted when the user has not used the computer for a period of 30 days.
LU card access is required when using 1B02. LU card access to 1B02 can be requested at the Service Desk. Access for students needs to be requested by their supervisor. For access, send the following information of the person that needs access to the Service Desk:
• LCN name;
• LU/umail address;
• LU card number;
• Start and end date of access;
Due to privacy regulations, the door must be locked when nobody is present. The LU card needs to be used to lock and unlock the door; the door does not automatically lock when closed.
The PhysioData Toolbox is a free easy-to-use graphical environment for visualizing, segmenting and processing physiological data.

Tobii Studio is software used in combination with a Tobii eye tracker. It can be used to create simple experiments, collect data, and analyze the eye tracking data.
Tobii Studio is installed on all lab computers. Tobii Studio can be requested at the ISSC to be installed on your work computer. To use Tobii Studio, a licence is required. Tobii Studio licenses belong to Tobii eye trackers.
AcqKnowledge is a software package that can be used for data acquisition with BIOPAC amplifiers and for subsequent data preprocessing and analysis. It comes preinstalled on all lab computers and can be installed on your work PC using the Software Center in Windows.

MATLAB is a software environment for numerical computing. It can be used to build experiments and analyze data. The former requires the free PsychToolbox add-on. MATLAB 2018b, PsychToolbox and GSTREAMER come preinstalled on all lab computers and can be requested for a work PC via the ISSC.
The Faculty owns a limited number of MATLAB licenses, which can only be used inside the univerisity network. Note that MATLAB is different from the MATLAB Component Runtime, which is the free runtime required for running the PhysioData Toolbox.
The VU-AMS Data, Analysis & Management Software (VU-DAMS) is used for data acquisition with VU-AMS hardware and can be used for subsequent data preprocessing and data analysis. Note that data collected with VU-DAMS can also be analyzed with the PhysioData Toolbox.
VU-DAMS comes preinstalled on all lab computers and can be installed on your work PC using the Software Centre in Windows.
Python 3 is an open-source general-purpose programming language. It comes preinstalled on all lab computers and can be installed on your work PC using the Software Center in Windows.
R is a free software environment used mainly for performing statistical analysis. R can be installed on your work PC using the Software Center in Windows. SOLO Research and Lab Support does not provide support for R.
Brain Vision Analyzer (BVA) is software used for pre-processing and analysing EEG and other physiological data.
- BVA is available in the Data Analysis room at the Faculty (1B02).
- BVA can be requested at the ISSC to be installed on a work computer.
- BVA can be used remotely for a fixed period on a Windows server with higher processing capacity. Remote server access must be requested via Topdesk (search on ‘SURKO’).
- Access is granted for 4 or 8 weeks and must be approved by the faculty key user. There may be costs associated with the use of the SURKO service.

SPSS is a software package used for performing statistical analyses. SPSS is preinstalled on the student computers in the Faculty and it can be installed on a work computer through the Software Center. SOLO Research and Lab Support does not provide support for SPSS.

ATLAS.ti is a program used mainly for the analysis of qualitative research data. ATLAS.ti can be installed on your work PC using the Software Centre. Atlas.ti licences are available for home use for students and staff. These licenses are valid for one year. For a licence code, please contact the ISSC Helpdesk: email@example.com.

The Observer XT is a software package used for the analysis of observational data. It is available in the Data Analysis room at the Faculty (1B02) and can also be requested via the ISSC for your work computer. You need to logon to use this software. Please contact SOLO Research and Lab Support for the credentials.
