Positive feedback and points for improvement Pilot Annual Interview

5 April 2023

The project team for the pilot The Annual Interview has received a lot of valuable information from the survey we have conducted among all staff members.

From November 2022 up until January 2023, Leiden Law School conducted an experiment with the Pilot Annual Interview, as a replacement for the P&D Interview. In February, we conducted an extensive evaluation of the pilot. We did this by means of a short survey among all staff members and with the support of focus groups: Academic Staff (WP), Support Staff (OBP), PhD Candidates, and Managers. The evaluations clearly show that this new method has been positively received. Participants felt that the interviews focused more on the future and continued development and appreciated the simplifications made to the grading standards. We also received a lot of useful tips and points for improvement. HR has advised the Faculty Board to continue working with this new method based on the outcomes of the evaluation. The Faculty Board has consented with our advice. Based on the evaluations, we will make the following improvements to the current interview process:

  • Some improvements to the content of the forms and tools;
  • The annual interview and report have been combined in 1 document, with references in the form of links to all available tools, combining all the available information in 1 document;
  • A new method will be developed for the Initial Interview: this was not included in our pilot;
  • The PDF forms will be replaced by Word documents to make them more user-friendly.

We hope to be able to release the improved documents by mid-May. Until then, people can continue to use the original forms and tools. These can be found on: Performance and Development Interview - Leiden University (universiteitleiden.nl). During the upcoming months, another two pilots will be conducted at SOZ and FGW. The combined outcomes of all the pilots will be used as the basis for a proposal for a university wide method starting 2024.
