Keep it cool in this warm weather: tips for a cool(er) workplace

14 June 2023

The past few days in a nutshell: hot, hotter, hottest. How do you keep yourself cool and your workplace bearable during this heatwave? Tips for a cool(er) workplace from KOG facilities manager Alexander van Drooge:

1. At the start of the working day, immediately open the windows and as many room doors as possible; the still 'cool' air from outside can then replace the hot air from the previous day.

2. Also immediately lower the blinds (where present), even if the sun is not yet shining on the window.

3. As soon as the temperature gets warmer outside than inside: close all windows to ensure that the 'cooler' air inside is not displaced by the warm air from outside. This feels contradictory, but really works best.

4. Drink plenty of water; you can also get cold water from the vending machines or Join the pipe taps.

5. Take plenty of breaks. Change of scenery promotes concentration; look for shady spots in, for example, the Van der Werffpark.

6. Wear light clothing.

7. Find a cooler workplace in other work rooms. Many people will be out of the office during the summer.

8. Where possible, only work in the office during the morning and at home during the afternoon.

9. Those who prefer to work at home throughout the day/warm period: please consult with your manager and adhere to the hybrid working regulations.
