Occupancy Measurement – Humanities Campus Workspaces | 24 November to 5 December

3 November 2025

AI translation

To gain a clear understanding of how work and meeting spaces are currently used across various buildings of the Faculty of Humanities, an occupancy measurement will be conducted from 24 November to 5 December. This study aims to provide insight into current usage patterns, allowing us to better align the working environment with staff needs — both in preparation for the future move to the Aleida Nijland building and to optimise existing workspaces.

What does the study involve?

The measurement will be carried out by the company Measuremen. During the period indicated, observations will take place four times a day to record:

- Which work and meeting spaces are in use

- Which spaces appear occupied but are temporarily vacant

- What type of activity is taking place, such as computer work, phone calls, meetings or reading

Measuremen staff will be recognisable by a company vest or shirt and will use smartphones to record their observations.

Purpose of the study

The aim is to gain insight into the activities taking place in various work and meeting spaces, as well as the occupancy rate per unit. The study will not only look at average occupancy, but also at how usage is distributed throughout the day and week, including peak and quiet periods. Based on this data, we will assess whether and, if so, where adjustments to the workspace are needed. The results will be shared with staff.

Buildings included in the measurement

The study will take place in the following buildings:

  • Huizinga (History)
  • PJ Veth (Philosophy, ACPA and SOZ)
  • Herta Mohr (LIAS, FB, KITLV, ASCL and IIAS)
  • Reuvens (LUCL, LIAS and UFB)

Questions

When the measurement begins, this will be clearly indicated with signs at the entrance to each building. If you have any questions about the study, please contact Carola Koetsier.
