Turn student challenges into solutions: free online international programme for students and staff
Want to make a real difference for students and gain hands-on experience in an international team? Sign up for the Una Europa Project Incubator.
This free, 8-week online programme will bring students and staff from across Europe together to develop creative, practical solutions to challenges faced by students. Think, for example, of cost of living, accessibility requirements, and language barriers.
Participants will work in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams, supported by experienced mentors. They will be guided through methods such as design thinking, user research and prototyping.
When?
From 10 March to 21 May 2026. With online sessions, teamwork and milestones throughout the period.
At the end, teams will present their solutions. One winning team will be selected to take part in the in‑person Student Project Incubator in Berlin (September 2026).
Who is it for?
Everyone can play a role:
- Students and PhD candidates can join as participants or mentors
- Professional and academic staff can join as mentors
What will you do?
Take a look at what you will do and how you can benefit, depending on your role.
Participants (students and PhD candidates)
There are 10 spots available for Leiden University students and PhD candidates. You will take part in nine online sessions and in between, will work on assignments with your team.
By participating, you will:
- Apply your theoretical knowledge in the real world;
- Explore how students from other disciplines perceive the world and learn the unique perspectives of your own studies;
- Experience a different type of learning environment from the traditional lecture;
- Develop prototypes that address real challenges to student engagement.
- Meet students from across Europe, have fun together and experience something new!
Mentors (staff, PhD candidates and students)
Professional staff, academic employees and students can act as mentors. In this role, you will support one or two teams by helping them to connect with each other and organise their work. You’ll also help create a friendly, supportive environment where team members feel comfortable and safe to express themselves and contribute to the process.
You won’t do this alone. As a mentor, you’ll be supported by programme coordinators. You’ll also join a Mentor Community where you can ask other mentors questions, talk about challenges and share best practices. Finally, there will be a 90-minute training session between 23 February and 5 March.
In return for your efforts, you will:
- Gain experience in facilitation and team leadership
- Develop intercultural, organisational and communication skills
- Make international connections.
- Strengthen your CV with a certificate and digital badge.
To be a mentor you’ll need approximately two hours per week. You should be able to attend most (preferably all) sessions when you are applying, but we do understand that life happens and you might not be available for every single one.
