New hot drinks and vending machines

11 February 2026

New hot drinks and vending machines are being installed across all university locations since 9 February, with all machines expected to be replaced by the end of March.

What's new?

Look and feel

The drinks machines have a new look and feel. Alongside additional functionality, extra attention has been given to a smooth user experience

Sustainable coffee and organic Fairtrade tea

The new machines will use two sustainable coffee beans:

  • Puro Fuerte – strong and intense
  • Puro Fino – fine and mild

The hot drinks machines will also have organic tea bags in the following flavours:

  • Puro Tea BIO Chamomile FT
  • Puro Tea BIO English Breakfast FT
  • Puro Tea BIO Forest Fruit FT
  • Puro Tea BIO Green Lemon FT
  • Puro Tea BIO Green Tea FT
  • Puro Tea BIO Rooibos FT
Plant-based options

A pilot scheme offering plant-based hot drinks machines has been running since September 2025, with around 25% of users choosing plant-based milk.

As a result, we will now be installing hot drinks machines with plant-based options at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Kamerlingh Onnes, Wijnhaven, Van, Lipsius, the University Library and Spui. These machines will be clearly marked.

Rainforest protection and carbon storage

Puro’s coffee is particularly sustainable. From the coffee’s harvesting and processing to its transport (by land and sea) and roasting, more carbon is stored than emitted.

For every kilo of Puro coffee, Leiden University supports rainforests through the World Land Trust (WLT) REDD+ programme. This safeguards rainforests, enhances carbon storage and promotes sustainable forest management, benefitting not only the climate but also biodiversity, nature conservation and local communities.

Regenerative farming and positive climate impact

Puro’s tea is produced by the SOFA cooperative in Sri Lanka using regenerative agriculture principles. This helps prevent soil erosion, restore biodiversity and increase carbon sequestration. Any processing waste is reused as natural fertiliser.

The tea is blended and packed by Quick Tea, an Eco-certified organisation that stores more carbon than it emits, contributing to the protection of natural environments and quality of life.

Cocoa: Tony’s Open Chain

Our cocoa is sourced through Tony’s Open Chain (Tony’s Chocolonely), ensuring 100% traceable cocoa.

Thanks to the chain’s five sourcing principles:

  • no deforestation has been detected since 2014;
  • all farms are GPS-mapped and monitored;
  • the chain meets Fairtrade, labour and environmental standards.

With certifications including EcoVadis, ISO 26000 and the CSR Performance Ladder, Tony’s Open Chain offers transparent, responsible sourcing with proven reductions in environmental impact.

By choosing Tony Chocolonely’s Open Chain cocoa, Leiden University becomes the first university with a fully traceable cocoa blend. No other cocoa blend on the market can be traced back to the cooperative or farmer. This unique cocoa ensures that farmers receive a price that supports a living income and protects them from exploitation.
