Method
Training course

The next Daily Dutch course will start on Wednesday 27 October 2021.

Course description

The Daily Dutch course is an intensive introduction to the Dutch language and culture. The aim of the course is to give our Social and Behavioural Sciences students and PhD candidates a basic understanding of Dutch and an opportunity to learn more about our culture. At the end of the course you will have a basic knowledge of Dutch and will be able to participate in simple conversations. The level on completion of the course will be A1.

Each week a new cultural theme will be introduced (in total 10 different themes). During each class you will be encouraged to practice the grammar, speech, pronounciation, and intonation of the Dutch language. The course provides lots of opportunities to practice speaking. Active participation is required of all students.

Course outline

The course consists of 12 classes of 2 hours each and 1 exam. The total study load per week is about 4 hours: 2 hours for the class and 2 hours for individual study and preparation. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of 2 classes, but this may affect their final grade negatively, as evaluation takes place continuously.

The course will take place online with the exception of the first (20 October 2021) and the last 2 lessons (12 and 19 January 2022), these will take place at the Pieter de la Court Building.

The final exam (eindtoets) is on Wednesday 19 January 2022, at the Pieter de la Court Building. After successfully finishing the course, the students will receive a certificate of completion.

About the exam

To obtain the Daily Dutch certificate, students need to achieve a minimum of 5.5 overall to pass the course. The participation grade is administered weekly, and to receive it students need to hand in the required homework before each class.
