How can we shape future growth and development in the light of climate adaptation, energy transition and urbanization? And how can this growth help to improve the quality of life and natural value in coastal areas? Come to the International Symposium on the 150th Anniversary of the New Waterway and be a part of shaping the future!

The symposium is part of a series of events in Rotterdam commemorating the 150th anniversary of the New Waterway, which Pieter Caland realised 150 years ago. In order to convert the delta into a shipping channel, he dug a waterway through the dunes of Hoek van Holland. As a result, Rotterdam has evolved into a modern delta metropolis linked to Europe and the rest of the world. That happened 150 years ago. We now face new challenges. Challenges we hope to address at the LDE PortCityFutures Centre's three-day symposium on the history and future of the New Waterway (Nieuwe Waterweg) in the Netherlands.

Key-note speakers

Prof. Carola Hein, Sabine Luning, Paul van de Laar, Han Meyer, Stephen Ramos, Paul Hudson, and Patrick Meire are among the many speakers. More speakers will be announced soon, as will the final programme, which will also include a tour of the port and the city of Rotterdam. For more information, visit the event page.

Invitation Nieuwe Waterweg Congress

The symposium is intended for professionals, scholars, and stakeholders interested in water and spatial planning issues.
