In March 2021, the container vessel Ever Given stranded in the Suez Canal, effectively disrupting the worldwide supply chain for months. From a legal perspective, the incident is an excellent example of the continued application of various traditional maritime legal particularisms, including the concepts of salvage, general average and global limitation of liability. After a discussion of the factual events (How did the incident happen? How was the vessel refloated?), the legal consequences will be explained and considered. We will also look at the current position and lessons learned.
