On April 17, Dario Fazzi and Andrew Gawthorpe will lead an open discussion with prominent Cambridge historian, Prof. Helen Thompson. In her new book, Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century (New York: Oxford University Press, 2022), Prof. Thompson vividly reconstructs the origins of the many fault lines that characterize our contemporary world. Through insightful analysis that combines economic, political, and cultural history, Prof. Thompson argues that the multifaceted quest for steady energy supplies, low inflation rates, and equality and inclusivity challenges modern democracies in almost existential ways, forcing them to renegotiate sovereignty and citizenship. One of the most compelling explorations of the varied crises of our times, Disorder invites scholars, pundits, policymakers, and the general public alike to reflect on the most intimate paradoxes of our days.

Helen Thompson is Professor of Political Economy. She has been at Cambridge since 1994. Her current research concentrates on the political economy of energy and the long history of the democratic, economic, and geopolitical disruptions of the twenty-first century. She is a regular panelist on Talking Politics and a columnist for the New Statesman.

If you wish to attend the seminar, please send a message to the PCNI seminar coordinator, Dario Fazzi at d.fazzi@hum.leidenuniv.nl.
