Taiwanese Literature in Dutch: the Voice of the Translators

Annelous Stiggelbout will discuss Sanmao’s Story of the Sahara (撒哈拉的故事) and the powerful sense of exploration that permeates her work. Silvia Marijnissen will present the diversity of Taiwanese poetry, based on her translations of Hsia Yu and Chen Yuhong among others. Lloyd Haft will introduce the metaphysical poet Zhou Mengdie.
The event will take place in Dutch and be moderated by Maghiel van Crevel and Anne Sytske Keijser.
It will mark the beginning of a newly established collaboration between Leiden University Libraries and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. A first donation of about 500 titles has been received this summer, and we are thankful to Lily Wang who arranged the transport of this important addition to our collections.
The event will be followed by drinks.
Sanmao
Sanmao (1943-1991), die was opgegroeid in een belezen familie in Taipei, vertrok in de jaren 1970 naar de Westelijke Sahara, toen nog een Spaanse kolonie, om daar te gaan wonen met haar Spaanse man José. Ze begon te schrijven over haar avonturen in de woestijn en haar leven met haar buitenlandse echtgenoot, en bereikte al snel een enorm publiek. Sanmao is in 1991 overleden, maar haar verhalen inspireren nog altijd nieuwe generaties Chineestalige lezers. Haar bekendste bundel reisverhalen, Berichten uit de Sahara, is in 2019 in het Nederlands verschenen, in vertaling van Annelous Stiggelbout.
