Prabowo Subianto’s ascent to the presidency in 2024 marked a significant turning point in contemporary Indonesian politics, often seen as signaling the gradual demise of Indonesia's democracy. In this conversation, we will explore the role of Islam in this contemporary context as part of a broader political reconfiguration, both among Islamic groups and in relation to other political forces. We aim to identify the key changes, emerging equilibriums, and the socio-economic and political implications for Indonesian Muslims more broadly.
To help us navigate these issues, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Achmad Munjid and Ms. Alissa Wahid from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, who will share their insights.
About the Speakers:
1. Dr. Achmad Munjid
Deputy Chairperson, International Network Development Agency, NU Central Executive Board; Head, Center for Security and Peace Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia
2. Ms. Alissa Wahid
Chairperson of Welfare Programs, NU Central Executive Board; Founder and National Director, Gusdurian Network Indonesia
Moderators: Dr. Verena Meyer and Dr. Rizal Shidiq
