Abstract
This talk explores inflectional morphology in Kaaɓooje, a dialect of Pulaar (Atlantic, Niger-Congo), with a focus on nominal and verbal inflection. The study examines how number, diminutive, augmentative, tense, aspect, and negation are morphologically encoded through nominal and verbal affixation. The results show that Kaaɓooje uses both reduced and full noun class suffixes, and distinctive diminutive and augmentative strategies. The study highlights the interaction between negation and tense-aspect, resulting in morphophonological alternations.
Comparative evidence identifies differences with other Pulaar dialects and languages in the Atlantic group. These findings contribute to the typology of Atlantic languages and reinforce the importance of documenting underdescribed Pulaar dialects.
