About the event
Over the last year, Iran has faced numerous challenges stemming from international conflicts, domestic unrest, and economic downturns. The field of peace science offers useful perspectives on how to understand regime resilience and Iranian geopolitics. Why has the Islamic Republic endured, despite multiple waves of anti-government unrest? Why has it been so difficult to negotiate a settlement between Iran and the United States? What does the war entail for global politics more generally? In this talk, Professor Idean Salehyan will discuss how contemporary research in peace science helps us to understand regime dynamics in Iran and the geopolitical challenges it faces.
About the speaker
Idean Salehyan is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Georgia and the Executive Director of the Peace Science Society. His research focuses on armed conflict, protest dynamics, environmental security, and forced migration. Professor Salehyan has published in leading journals, including International Organization, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Conflict Research, and the Journal of Peace Research. He is the author of Rebels Without Borders: Transnational Insurgencies in World Politics (Cornell University Press) and has created numerous data resources in peace science, including the Social Conflict Analysis Database. Professor Salehyan received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 2006.
