Payments to research participants within Europe
Participants are used in various scientific researches. These participants receive a fee for this participation. There a three categories of participants:
- Anonymous: option may only be applied if anonymity is required based on the research plan.
- Pseudonymous/non-anonymous: an participation fee up to a maximum of 50 euros.
- Pseudonymous/non-anonymous: an participation fee higher than 50 euros.
You can make payments to research participants from SEPA countries (within Europe) via a bank transfer, a gift ,VVV gift card or in cash (cash is only possible with anonymous participants).
Important to bear in mind when making a payment
For participants either living in the Netherlands or outside of the Netherlands applies that if they recieve more than 50 euros from Leiden University, with a maximum of 180 euros per month (this can be from different researches), then we must announce this to the tax authorities. You should inform the research participant of this in advance.. Leiden University does not send out additional notices.
Payment to research participants outside Europe
You can make payments to research participants from NON-SEPA countries (outside Europe) by bank transfer or in the form of a gift.
Important to bear in mind when making a payment
Extra transaction costs are always charged to the university for payments to NON-SEPA countries. This starts at 4.50 euros per payment and can be higher. It is also necessary to provide additional bank details to complete the payment. Payments of less than 10 euros outside Europe will not be transacted.
