Why are children still unprotected online despite strict EU laws?

In a new blog, Simone van der Hof, Professor of Law and Digital Technology, explains why existing European regulations such as the GDPR, AVMSD, and DSA still fail to adequately protect children from the risks of social media and digital services.

The problem is not the lack of legislation, but weak enforcement and poor coordination. Van der Hof calls for clear guidelines, stronger EU-wide enforcement, and attention to emerging challenges such as AI and gaming. According to her, innovation should focus on creating safe, child-friendly digital environments rather than maximising profits.
