Sarah Wolff on Ceuta and the Geopoliticisation of Migration
In a series of interviews to Nu.nl, RTL Nieuws, Radio Canada and Al-Jazeera, Professor Wolff has discussed the tensions this summer surrounding Morocco and Ceuta, as well as the far-right Reform UK’s proposal for “Operation Fortress” to deploy military force to address crossings in the English Channel.
Across the interviews, Wolff highlights that it is more a geopolitical crisis than a migration crisis given the growing geopoliticisation and instrumentalisation of migration, arguing that migrants and refugees are increasingly being used as bargaining chips by foreign governments.
Wolff further pointed to the need for a broader European debate on migration beyond border control. This includes as quoted in Nu.nl 'too little attention paid to the root causes of migration, such as poverty and repression', which signals that migration will continue and that Europe needs to rethink its own solidarity.
