Demolition of Van Eyckhof/Wijkplaats nearly completed, renovation to start as soon as possible

The dust clouds are slowly settling in Van Eyckhof/Van Wijkplaats (Cluster South). The demolition work and circular dismantling that started in autumn are almost completed. In the meantime, the invitation to tender for the renovation ois taking slightly longer than expected and, therefore, the start of the construction has been postponed. In March, however, we will continue with the development of the interior.

Preparing for the renovation of Cluster South

The renovation of Cluster South (Van Eyckhof-Van Wijkplaats) is the third project in the development of the Humanities Campus. Materials have been harvested for reuse and demolition work has been carried out. As of now, the parking garage and the bicycle shed have been closed and Cluster South is almost ready for the actual renovation. Is your bicycle still parked in the underground parking? Pick it up as soon as possible! As soon as the contractor has been decided, the actual renovation will commence. In March, we will already look at the interior choices: which tables, chairs, etc. will be used in the renovated building.

The new Cluster South

The new building will have a stronger characteristic presence, with attractive rooms where students and staff members canmeet. There will be more than 700 teaching and self-study places. This be in the form of 20 new lecture halls, workgroup rooms and larger leture auditoriums . Additionally, a pleasant working environment will be created with workstations, common rooms and meeting rooms. In due course, the building will be given a new name, with a careful consideration of the involvement of our faculty's staff members. The renovated Cluster Shouth will be used - from 2023 (expected) - by the African Study Centre, the University Library, Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO), the Royal Institute for Language, Agriculture and Ethnology ( (KITLV), Education and Student Affairs (OSZ) and the Institute for Area Studies (LIAS).

Humanities Campus

The renovation of the Humanities’ buildings will provide the university with modern accommodation that can meet its growing faculty. The goal is to create an attractive educational environment that stimulates encounters and where students and staff members enjoy spending time.
