Hanneke Hulst new Scientific Director Institute of Psychology

Prof. Hanneke Hulst has been appointed Scientific Director of the Institute of Psychology by the Board of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. She will start on 1 February 2024 for a period of 3 years, succeeding Andrea Evers and interim director Serge Rombouts.

After studying Health Sciences and Neuroscience at the Vrije Universiteit van Amsterdam, Hulst obtained her PhD at Amsterdam UMC (locatie VUmc). She recently obtained the Master of Philosophy, Bioethics and Health there to enrich her neuroscience research. She focuses her research on cognitive impairment in people with the brain disease multiple sclerosis (MS) and is actively committed to transferring scientific knowledge to society. Since 2021, Hulst holds the chair in Neuropsychology in Health and Disease and leads the unit Health, Medical and Neuropsychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University.

The Faculty Board is pleased with her appointment and says of her efforts as unit chair: 'It is a task she performs in an energetic, persuasive and connecting way. We are confident that she will also demonstrate these qualities in her new role.'

Recognition and Rewards

For De Jonge Akademie, Hulst was part of the national Recognition and Rewards steering group from 2021-2023. She is also a driving force in this field within the Institute of Psychology. As the project leader for Recognition and Rewards, she aims to transform the academy into an attractive workplace for young researchers again. Rombouts: 'Hanneke has a clear vision of the future for the institute, including in the area of Recognition and Rewards. The Executive Board is therefore delighted that Hanneke will take on the role of Scientific Director and warmly welcomes her to the team.'

Institute strategy

Hulst on her appointment: 'I feel honoured to serve this wonderful and versatile institute as Scientific Director in the coming years. I can't wait to further put our strategy into practice!'
