A quick call with... the beadle about inaugural lectures in Lokhorstkerk
Inaugural lectures and PhD ceremonies are usually held in the Grand Auditorium in the Academy Building. Due to its temporary closure for the installation of a new audiovisual system, Lokhorstkerk is serving as an alternative venue. Beadle Erick van Zuijlen tells us more.
Why are inaugural lectures and PhD ceremonies being held in Lokhorstkerk?
‘The audiovisual system in the Grand Auditorium had not been upgraded in nearly a decade, so it was in urgent need of an update. That includes installing new cabling and a completely redesigned infrastructure. During this period, PhD ceremonies are being held in the Senate Chamber. However, with a capacity of just 64 and no possibility for live streaming, Lokhorstkerk is being as an alternative venue for larger PhD ceremonies and all inaugural lectures.
What’s it like using the church as a venue?
‘Great! We have a good working relationship with the team from Lokhorstkerk. We actually held PhD defences there during a previous renovation, some 15 years ago now. Visitors are often pleasantly surprised by the beautiful space, with its high pulpit and rich sense of history. What makes it especially memorable is the cortège that walks from Lokhorstkerk to the Academy Building for the reception afterwards. It creates unique moments and stunning photo opportunities – on the bridge, for example.’
What challenges have you faced?
‘Using a different venue calls for a different setup: we’re renting everything, from cameras to technical equipment. We had to make a few adjustments during the first ceremony, but everything ran smoothly after that. It’s mainly a question of getting used to the new venue.’
When will the Grand Auditorium reopen?
‘The start of October. The renovation work is running about a week behind schedule, but we expect to be back in the Grand Auditorium from 14 October onwards.’
