Renewed bachelor’s programmes get underway!
Besides the launch of our new degree programmes in The Hague, at the start of this academic year we are also fully committed to the renewed curricula of our existing bachelor’s programmes. Here, you can read about the most important developments within the programmes.
Bachelor’s in Criminology
A new cohort of first-year Criminology students has started at our faculty. The renewed bachelor’s programme has been given a clear quality boost, with the strengthening and renewal of four core learning pathways:
- Crime & Behaviour
- Approach & Prevention
- Criminological Research
- Being a Criminologist

These pathways are clearly interwoven in the entire degree programme, offering students more structure and direction. Other key features of the renewed programme include: a focus on personal development with a strong labour market orientation, law courses specifically designed for criminologists, and greater emphasis on active learning. A special addition this year is the newly developed board game CrimiNoMoney, which introduces students to criminological issues in a fun and engaging way.
Bachelor’s programmes in Law
First-year students of Law, Tax Law and Notarial Law are also starting the first year of their degree with a renewed curriculum, aligned with the faculty Kernvisie. With these changes, we aim to offer challenging and engaging education centred on contemporary societal issues. Key innovations in the legal programmes for this first year include:
-
The introduction of Atelier Teaching in semester 2, where students participate in cross-disciplinary, interdisciplinary, engaging and small-scale courses. The first atelier theme in Block 3 will focus on the environment.
-
A recalibration of the attendance requirement: the standard is now explicit that students are not only physically present, but also come prepared and actively participate in all learning activities. This is expected to increase student participation, resulting in better quality in education.
-
Better implementation of the learning pathways, with the skills pathway taking a prominent role from the very start of the degree programme.
-
A new policy for resits, allowing first-year students to participate in the resit examination provided they attended the first exam. This means that access to the resit no longer depends on achieving a minimum grade of 4 in the first exam. This policy will be applied consistently across all three academic years on a cohort basis.
Faculty-wide: Registering attendance and matching
Starting this academic year, the attendance of first-year students in all bachelor’s programmes will be registered in a new way, using Academy Attendance. More information (currently only in Dutch) can be found on the LTC HUB. Last year, pilots with Academy Attendance were conducted in Blocks 3 and 4 in the first year of the bachelor’s.
In addition, all new first-year students will have completed the matching module. This online module, mandatory since this academic year for all bachelor’s programmes, helps students to gain a clear and realistic understanding of their chosen degree programme in advance.
Towards an engaging and innovative academic year
Through the renewal of our bachelor’s programmes, the faculty reaffirms its strong commitment to quality, innovation and future-proof education. We look forward to working together to make this academic year a success!
