Why Academia in Motion symposium is not to be missed

The future of publishing and PhD research, engaging society in research and leadership that suits your role and personality... These and other topics will be the focus of the Academia in Motion symposium at PLNT on Tuesday 12 May.

The Academia in Motion programme is increasingly shaping university policy, as well as daily research, teaching and collaboration activities. At the same time, this movement raises new questions: What’s already working well? Which challenges are staff facing? And what’s needed to put the good intentions behind Open Science and Recognition & Rewards into practice?

In the morning, the programme will focus on in-depth discussion in smaller sessions, providing the opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues. In the afternoon, the key insights from the morning programme will be brought together in a plenary Town Hall meeting, with plenty of audience discussion.

The programme will feature:

1. Parenting in academia: striking a workable balance
From sleep deprivation and unpredictable childcare to publication pressure and implicit expectations: how do you combine an academic career with parenting young children? In this workshop, parents share their experiences: Which obstacles did they encounter? What genuinely helped? And what is needed to combine parenthood with a sustainable academic career?

2. Reshaping PhD trajectories
PhD candidates do so much more than publish: they develop software, mentor students, collaborate across disciplines, apply open science principles and engage society in their research. This session focuses on how this broader contribution should be factored into PhD trajectories and how we can better prepare researchers for careers both within and outside the academic world.

3. Town Hall: in conversation with the Board
What is needed to ensure that Academia in Motion’s ambitions are truly realised, day to day? In conversation with Rector Magnificus Sarah de Rijcke, we look ahead: which decisions need to be made, and what does that require of the university and its staff? Questions, experiences and critical reflection form the basis of an open discussion.
