PhD research at two universities

Do you want to conduct your PhD research at two universities? There are two possible ways to do this: with a cotutelle or a joint doctoral degree (JDD). Arrangements about admission, supervision and the location of defence will then be set out in either a joint doctoral degree (JDD) or a cotutelle agreement.

Cotutelle agreement

During your PhD, you can be supervised by both a Leiden University supervisor and a supervisor from another university. Arrangements on admission, supervision and and the location of the PhD defence will be set out in a cotutelle agreement.

The PhD defence must take place at Leiden University and you will receive a diploma from Leiden University. If you wish, a supplement can be attached stating that your research was also supervised at the partner institution(s).

Model cotutelle agreement

A cotutelle agreement must be approved by the dean, doctorate board, the rector magnificus and both supervisors.

Joint doctorate degree (JDD)

A joint doctorate degree (JDD) means that you write one thesis under the responsibility of two universities. Both universities will provide you with supervision.

The PhD defence can take place at either Leiden University or the partner university, and this location is set out in the JDD agreement. You receive one degree from two universities.
