Swaantje Mondt Fund Scholarship

The Swaantje Mondt Fund Scholarship is intended for students who wish to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights and meet all criteria for admission.

For who

Students who wish to follow, and meet the admission criteria for, the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be highly motivated to follow the Master of Laws Advanced Studies Programme in International Children’s Rights, and
  • lack the financial means to follow the study programme without the assistance of a scholarship

Obligations

The applicant must have the firm intention of returning to their home country after graduation and bringing into practice the knowledge obtained during the programme, in order to improve the implementation of international children’s rights in their home country.

Exclusions

You cannot be awarded a Swaantje Mondt Scholarship if:

  • you will follow a study programme other than the Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme in International Children’s Rights at Leiden University.

Scholarship amount

The scholarship amounts to €10,000, which covers a large part of the programme tuition fee (the total tuition fee is €22,300). The duration of the scholarship is one year.

Note that this scholarship does not cover living costs or the entire tuition fee. If you need a student visa or residence permit, you will be required to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your living costs and the remainder of the tuition fee. 

Application process

  1. Submit an online application for admission to the Master of Laws: Advanced Studies in International Children’s Rights and pay the application fee of € 100. Don't forget to upload a valid English test result in your application. 

  2. In your online application, upload a letter of motivation for the Swaantje Mondt Fund scholarship that meets all the following criteria: 

    • It clearly states your full name and student number (from uSis) and that the letter concerns your motivation for the Swaantje Mondt Fund scholarship.
    • It describes your financial situation and why you are unable to follow the programme without a scholarship.
    • It states your reasons for wishing to follow the study programme. 
  3. After submitting your online application, send an e-mail to the programme coordinator via ICRscholarships@law.leidenuniv.nl indicating your interest in the scholarship and attaching your scholarship motivation letter.

Note that your scholarship application will only be processed after you have submitted your application for admission and your scholarship application via Leiden University’s online application portal (uSis), and have paid the application fee.

Selection process

Candidates for the scholarship are selected by the Admission Board of the programme and the scholarship's private donors. Scholarship decisions will be announced in the first week of May 2026. 

Finding housing

Be aware that finding housing in Leiden, The Hague and the surrounding area can be challenging due to the limited availability of affordable student accommodation. Background

The Swaantje Mondt Fund Scholarship is a named Fund at the Leiden University Fund (LUF), which aims to enable students to study at Leiden University and subsequently participate constructively in the civil society, the government or the development of their country of origin.

Additional financial information

This is not a full scholarship. Part of the tuition fee (€12,300) plus travel, housing and living costs must be covered by the student. You can find information on monthly living costs in the Netherlands on our financial matters page
