The academic year officially commences on 1 September and ends on 31 August. On collective closing days the university is closed and no lectures take place. The academic calendar applies to the whole university and to all study programmes with the exception of medicine.

The transition to the new Basic Administration System BAS InSite means that several tiles where you make HR, financial and administrative requests in the Service Portal or SAP Self Service will be closing at different times. These platforms will be replaced in the new year by BAS InSite.

SAP is a software system that is used for automating business processes within the University. These processes include purchasing, sales and invoicing, as well as keeping track of staff administration. You use SAP when you want to apply for leave and when you want to order products.

Leiden University has an active staff association that provides a wide range of events each year ranging from theatre visits and courses to trips abroad. Membership costs only €2.50 per month.

Plagiarism is considered fraud. There can be serious repercussions for students that commit plagiarism. The university provides tools and support to check whether students have committed plagiarism in assignments and papers.

What should you do in an emergency?

PhD candidates who register on or from 1 September 2024 onwards will be charged an annual fee to contribute to the costs of their PhD trajectory. If you have started your PhD trajectory before this date, please read the information below.
