Safety and security
The purpose of Security is to make sure that everyone within the university can study, work and relax in a safe and pleasant environment. This means not only responding to incidents but also preventing them.
Security helps to ensure compliance with the house rules, so that the environment remains safe, secure, respectful and well-organised. At the same time, of course, we need to maintain an essential balance between retaining the university’s open character and protecting the university community. Whether by means of access control, camera surveillance or speaking to people who break the house rules, Security contributes to an open, but safe university. In all these activities, we take account of academic freedom and do not impose unnecessary obstacles. Together we ensure that the university continues to be a place where everyone feels welcome and protected.
Security monitoring during and outside office hours
Incidents outside office hours can be reported to our mobile surveillance team on 06 26 97 50 16. Examples might include the consequences of an attempted break-in, broken glass, lights that should not be on, people who may have been locked in and anything that looks irregular in and around the buildings.
Security on the campus
Leiden University provides security for the buildings, for example by using Security staff and LU-Card checks. Read more about security on the campus.
Security Measures Steering Committee
The Steering Committee gives advice on temporary (or structural) security measures in the university’s buildings and grounds. More information about the Security Measures Steering Committee.
