Internship lecturer at university and supervisor at the internship organisation
An internship offers students a great opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a professional environment, to gain work experience and to explore a career path. Due to the varying content and form of internships, and because the student mostly works independently, it is important to have good and structured supervision. Our students are supported by an internship lecturer at the university (internal at the Faculty of Humanities) and an external internship supervisor from the internship organisation.
This page is for the internal Humanities internship lecturer. The internship lecturer is involved in the internship preparation, in supporting the student during the internship and in assessment at the end of the internship.
Internship regulations
Our Faculty has internship regulations for bachelor’s and master’s programmes that include matters relating to study load, admission, location, internship plan and agreement, internship report and final product, assessment and division of responsibilities. Please make sure to read these regulations carefully before starting as an internship lecturer.
You can find the Internship Regulations in the appendices of the Faculty Course and Examination Regulations.
Step-by-step plan and role of the internship lecture
Preparation phase – internship plan and agreement
The student writes an internship plan (template available on the Career Service website) and submits this for approval to (in the following order):
- the Faculty internship coordinator (Career Service)
- the (internal) internship lecturer (university)
- the (external) internship supervisor (from the internship organisation)
Before signing the plan it is important to pay attention to the following:
- Is there a clear description of the internship assignment, content of the internship assignment and result of the internship assignment (level of the internship assignment)
- Is the division into different phases and the planning of the assignment realistic?
- Concrete and preferably measurable learning objectives that can be reflected on at the end of the internship.
- Concrete agreement on the supervision by the internship lecturer and the internship supervisor.
- The number of credits (The number of EC can be assigned per 5 EC: with a minimum of 10 EC and a maximum of 20 EC).
- In addition, you’ll notice that the template for the internship plan consists of two parts, the internship plan itself and the agreement. This standard agreement for internships is mandatory in the Netherlands and is only valid after approval from the Board of Examiners.
If you, as the internship lecturer, agree with the content of the internship plan you sign it. The student also signs and makes sure to get a signature from the internship supervisor. The student then submits the signed internship plan to the internship coordinator, who then sends it to the Board of Examiners.
Supervision during the internship
- Arrange that the student contacts you during the first week of the internship to share how the student has been welcomed, and if things are going according to what has been agreed upon with the internship organisation.
- During the internship, the student contacts the internship lecturer once every three weeks to share their progress by email, phone or MS Teams (according to what has been agreed to in the internship plan).
- Halfway through the internship, the student plans a meeting with the internship supervisor and the internship lecturer. This can be on location or by phone/Teams/Zoom. During this meeting the student’s progress is discussed.
- In case of any issues during the internship, the student has to first try to solve this themselves. When this fails the internship lecturer can step in and try to reach a solution together with the student and the internship supervisor. In case of any doubts or if you require additional advice you can contact the Career Service.
Assessment
- Halfway through the internship period, the Career Service will send a feedback form to the internship supervisor, who will complete this during the final stages of the internship and then sends it to the internship lecturer. As an internship lecturer, you use this form to prepare for the final meeting and the assessment.
- Halfway through the internship period, the Career Service will send you an assessment form.
- The student submits a draft of the internship report to you as the internship lecturer (around two weeks after the end of the internship; the exact date has been recorded in the internship plan).
- When the final version of the internship report is finished, you arrange a final assessment meeting with the student.
- You carry out the assessment, partly based on the feedback from the internship supervisor, and you make sure the grade is registered. For more information see: Internship assessment
