Brightspace

Brightspace is Leiden University's digital learning environment. With Brightspace you can share course materials, grades and updates with your students. You can create and evaluate assignments and quizzes, perform plagiarism checks, provide personalised feedback and peer-feedback, and start discussions.

Brightspace includes many integrated tools and other options to enhance your teaching and increase your students' active participation. The Grade book in Brightspace allows you to record grades, calculate final grades and share them with students, among other things.

The university and faculty offers support for setting up and advancing your Brightspace course environment, as well as the associated Grade book.

Grades and Grade book support

You can create grade items for projects, assignments, discussions, quizzes, etc. The Grades tool provides a series of features to create and manage your grade book. A grade book contains your grading system, grade calculations, grade scheme, grade items, and view and display options. You must set up a grade book before you can use the Grades tool.

On screensteps you can find an overview page with different video's about working with grades and creating a grade book (with formula's). You can also follow a workshop to set up your grade book.

Brightspace preparation for a new semester

A good start of the new semester starts with preparing your Brightspace course.

Below you find a step-by-step overview for the Brightspace preparation. It is split into what you should know about the process and what you should do. We advise you to reserve about 60 minutes to follow these steps. Once you have taken all steps, you are ready to start the semester!

What you should know

As soon as a course has been scheduled in uSis, Brightspace creates a course environment.

The coordinators provide the faculty scheduling team with a list of courses and the assigned teachers. The courses are scheduled in TermTime. SEEDS will add the teachers to Brightspace, based on an export from TermTime.

Student registrations for the courses will open in mid-July. The moment a student is registered in uSis, the student is registered in the course environment.

In a new course, you need to add new groups. Groups change every year and can be added manually.

Sections is a tool to manage and divide large classes. Sections are directly linked with work groups in uSis, thus also change every year. When students enroll for a work group in uSis, they will be automatically added to the linked section in your Brightspace course.

What you should do

If you will teach a new course or you have redeveloped your course significantly, you might (want to) start with an empty course environment.

You can use the Quickstart Brightspace guidelines (on the right) to set up your course environment. SEEDS is happy to help you with any didactic or technical questions!

If you want to copy components from a previous course, continue with step 1. Otherwise, continue with step 2.

Your new course does not contain any content. With a course copy you can easily make a copy of your course content from last year. Only the content is copied, students or student data are not included.

There are two copying options:

  1. Copy a whole course;
  2. Copy components.

Note: not all tools and options are (fully) copied to the new course. You might need to enable certain tools, or check certain settings. For example, you must activate Turnitin Assignments once.

If you want to make some changes to your course, your course environment will probably also need some changes. SEEDS is happy to help you with any didactic or technical questions that arise in the process!

A few weeks before the start of a new semester, students will have access to the new course environment. Each course has a start date. This date determines the moment student will have access to the content of the course. You can adjust the start date yourself.

SEEDS will add the teachers to Brightspace, based on an export from the scheduling system TermTime. As a teacher, you will be added with the Instructor role in Brightspace. As an instructor, you can manually add colleagues. If you want to add a large group of colleagues, please contact SEEDS. We can have a bulk enrollment carried out for you.

Experience Brightspace as a Science student!

In the Student Experience for Teachers environment you can experience a Brightspace course from a student's perspective. Enroll in the course and complete different assignments in Brightspace and associated tools. You might even discover some useful functionalities that you are not familiar with! Use the incorporated teacher tips to apply them to your own course environment right away.
