New Protocol for (Social) Safety during Archaeology Internships

2 September 2025

Providing a safe study environment for our students is very important to the Faculty of Archaeology. As part of the programme, this also includes ensuring a safe working environment during (fieldwork) internships both in the Netherlands as well as abroad, whether these are organised by Faculty staff or by external parties.

To ensure this safety, a protocol has been developed that outlines key points of attention regarding internships; before, during, and after the internship. This protocol has recently been approved by the Faculty Board.

Next steps

The protocol also includes a number of follow-up steps:

  • Developing a roadmap with essential information relevant before, during, and after the internship
  • Streamlining internship-related information in the Brightspace modules
  • Making a reporting form online available, allowing students to report (socially) unsafe situations. With respect to the privacy of students and other parties involved, we are carefully examining how to ensure the security of this form.

These steps will be completed during the first semester. Students will be informed at each stage. See the Dutch-language safety protocol for more information (please note that follow-up messages will be in English as well as Dutch).
