What would you do in an emergency situation at work?

28 October 2025

3 November is Emergency Response Day, so now’s the time to consider your answer. What if a colleague is suddenly unwell or you see smoke coming out an office?
Would you freeze, or would you take immediate action? Every second counts in an emergency, so it’s essential you know how to reach the Emergency Response Team (BHV).

Call the reception desk emergency number
At the KOG the emergency number is 071-5277979, at the Old Observatory the number is 071-5277799
Emergency Response Officers will be contacted who immediately come to the scene of the incident. If you get no response, call emergency number 112 and send a colleague of student to the reception to inform them about the arrival of emergency services.

These numbers are also on the yellow sticker on your computer screen, so check it out

More emergency response officers needed!
Emergency response officers (called BHV’ers in Dutch) are colleagues who are trained to act in the event of an emergency, e.g. an accident, fire, or during an evacuation. Each faculty is responsible for having enough properly trained emergency response officers. Hybrid working has meant that more people often work from home. So, we need more people to join our Emergency Response Team to ensure we have enough people to cover all emergency situations at faculty buildings.

Would you like to make a difference?
Would you like to make a difference and help your colleagues? Join our Emergency Response Team! You’ll receive professional training and will play an important role in creating a safe working environment for your colleagues. As an emergency response officer you have additional responsibilities and are therefore entitled to an annual gross allowance.
