How do you recognize sexual misconduct? What factors contribute to normalising such behaviour, and how can you challenge this? How do you make the subject open for discussion? And what can you do when a student or colleague approaches you with an experience of sexual misconduct?

During the Consent is Key Week, we are once again offering the training Standing together against sexual misconduct at Leiden University. The training was offered last year as part of HEAR ME NOW and was highly valued by participating staff members. We are therefore offering the training again, this time in Leiden.

You will receive practical tools for recognising sexual misconduct, making it open for discussion and responding to it professionally. The training is intended for staff members who come into contact with students as part of their role and want to contribute to a socially safe university. The training is also highly suitable for staff members who want to apply these skills in the workplace.

What will you learn?

The training will cover the following topics, among others:

• what sexual misconduct is and how it can manifest itself, both offline and online;

• current figures, trends and developments relating to sexual misconduct;

• the theory behind sexual misconduct and the different factors that can contribute 
  to its occurrence and persistence;

• the influence of online environments and the role of the manosphere;

• recognising and trusting your own judgement and gut feeling when something doesn’t feel right;

• your role as a staff member in recognising, preventing and discussing sexual 
  misconduct;

• how to respond professionally when a student or colleague shares an experience of 
  sexual misconduct with you.

Through interactive exercises and case studies, you will practise responding to situations you may encounter in your professional role. There will be room to share experiences, discuss questions and reflect on your own role and the actions you can take.

Who is it for?

The training is primarily intended for employees of Leiden University who are in contact  with students. This includes lecturers, study advisers, student support staff, confidential advisers and other staff members who regularly interact with students as part of their role. The training is also highly suitable for staff members who want to contribute to social safety in their own work environment.
