XR ERA Meetup: 'Developing Practical Virtual Field Trips for Engineering Students on Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing'

Date
Thursday 12 March 2026
Time

MS Teams (Online)

XR ERA is an online, international community dedicated to knowledge sharing within the field of Extended Reality (XR) technologies in education. Founded in 2020, it is wholly run by the Leiden Learning & Innovation Centre (LLInC) and organises monthly community Meetups, at which specially-invited speakers present their recent projects and research, followed by a Q&A

For our March Meetup, we’re delighted to welcome Giorgos Mallinis and Charalampos Georgiadis from the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) to dive into their work on the EU-funded SURE-VFT project for XR Virtual Field Trips. Developed to enhance the education and training of surveying engineering students, these particularly target skill acquisition in the key areas of photogrammetry and remote sensing.

In addition to addressing the motivations behind SURE-VFT as a whole, Giorgos and Charalampos will also explore the following:

  • Development of the project’s conceptual framework and pedagogical design
  • Technical implementation of virtual environments supporting field data collection
  • Land use/land cover mapping, spectroradiometry, and 3D modelling

For any questions, contact Pippa Brownlie (xrcommunity@llinc.leidenuniv.nl).

How to sign up?

Access to all Meetups is exclusive to XR ERA community members but, if you would like to attend, it's not too late to register here for our free membership and access! The MS Teams invite will be sent by email.
