For hundreds of years, children in Ancient Egypt learned to read using The Satire of the Trades, a text in which a father gives advice to his son through descriptions of different professions. PhD candidate Judith Jurjens investigated how this worked in practice.

Leiden University has awarded its prestigious University Medal to Emeritus Professor Lex van der Eb. As a pioneer in genetics and molecular biology, he received this honour for his services to science and his key role in the development of the Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP).

On 22 July 2024 our colleague Geert-Jan van den Hoek passed away. Geert-Jan started in the role of Strategic Secretary for Leiden University in February 2023. Unfortunately, after far too short a period, health problems forced him to stop working. Sadly, recovery was ultimately not possible.
