In this talk, followed by Q&A, Anoma van der Veere and Casper Wits will discuss how recent international developments are affecting Japan's geopolitical outlook and international position. First, Anoma will briefly discuss his report "Shaping a New Alliance: Japan’s Defense Evolution and Strategic Shift towards NATO and Europe" (published with the Leiden Asia Centre). Then the speakers will discuss recent developments in Japan and the Japanese reaction to the Trump presidency; European approaches to Japan and the East Asian region; as well as Japan's attempts to forge closer ties with Europe.
After this, there will be plenty of time for a Q&A and discussion, where Anoma will elaborate on his experiences and views as a journalist working in Japan, and Casper will do the same from his stance as an academic at Leiden University.
