August 29 — the day before Sabine's birthday and just a few days ahead of the start of the Academic Year, and with it a new cycle of teaching in our programme — will be a special occasion to remember Sabine, acknowledging her contributions as a person, friend, scholar, colleague, mentor and teacher.
This timing is not coincidental, but rather symbolic: a ritual moment to pause and honour the legacy of Sabine. We want to highlight her outstanding contribution as an educator, notably her recurring recognition as Teacher of the Year. By celebrating her memory at this meaningful juncture, we acknowledge the deep inspiration she continues to offer us — her spiritual heritage. It is about "demanding the blessing of the ancestors before you start your work."
We remember Sabine for being inspiring, critical and joyful. Sabine conducted anthropological research on a broad variety of themes in a great many regions. For her, ethnographic fieldwork meant building lasting relationships with her interlocutors, and this also deepened relationships with the many colleagues who could share such experiences with her. In her worklife, Sabine was also a relationship-builder, inspiring many students, colleagues and societal actors, each of whom still carry the stories of their encounters, adventures and learning experiences with her.
We hope ‘Remembering Sabine’ can allow us to share these memories, the inspiration and the joy they brought. During the meeting, colleagues, students, co-workers and friends can share their memories of who Sabine was academically, professionally, and personally.

Following the presentations, we will jointly go to Kagerzoom de Strengen, where we will ceremoniously commemorate Sabine at this place where she loved to come. We will close with an informal pick-nick dinner.
