An increasing number of scholars at Leiden are using quantitative methods to study topics in politics, policy, and political economy. One challenge of such methods, especially experimental studies, is that a considerable amount of work must be completed before data collection begins, and there are few opportunities to correct errors or shortcomings once studies are executed or fielded. Moreover, opportunities to receive feedback at the most critical stage are limited, since many conference venues discourage the presentation of (just) research designs, pilots or early findings.

At the same time, scholarly communities are placing growing emphasis on the pre-registration of hypotheses and research design choices before data collection. This further increases the importance of making careful decisions in advance and obtaining as much constructive feedback as possible during the design stage.

To help address this challenge, we are organizing an interfaculty workshop that gives Leiden researchers the opportunity to present and receive feedback on their research designs and analysis plans of quantitative studies before data collection as well as on work in progress based on already collected data. Our aim is to foster an inclusive and supportive community of scholars who, while working on diverse topics, are united by their commitment to rigorous quantitative research broadly conceived, and to experimental work in particular.

The first Policy and Politics Pre-Analysis Plan (PAP) Workshop in the series of three workshops this coming academic year will take place in Wijnhaven 3.48 on 23 October at 10:00-12:00
