Pieter Johannes Veth (1814-1895) was Professor of Geography and Ethnology.

The herbarium was constructed in 1914 between the Academy Building and the Botanical Laboratory. The site comprised a five-storey warehouse for storing the plant collection, a staircase that opened onto a central connecting hallway and a service wing on the other side. Adjacent to this building was a lower, connecting building that was extended in 1953.
