Call for Paper/Panel Proposals: 'Regulating Remittances: Methods, Case Studies and Theories'

JUSTREMIT and the Institute of Security and Global Affairs at Leiden University will host a conference on 12 and 13 October on Global Regulatory Regimes and Remittances. Academics, practitioners from the regulatory sector, as well as representatives from international financial institutions are invited to contribute. Abstracts for short papers and presentations are welcome. Deadline: 18 September 2023.

Remittances—money and values that migrants and expatriates send to their countries of origin—are the largest external source of financing to Low and Middle-Income Countries. Because of their enormous importance, remittances attracted the attention of local and international actors, including financial regulators, states, central banks, and international financial institutions. These actors have developed regulatory frameworks and policies that can protect remittances from illicit uses. But, how do these policies protect remittances, and what are their impacts? What challenges, complexities, and uncertainties are associated with regulating different remittance systems? These are some of the questions we will discuss in the JUSTREMIT2023 conference.

Call for papers and panel proposals

We invite papers/ panel proposals that address the following topics:

• Regulating formal and ‘informal’ remittance systems.
• Remittance regulations in post-conflict countries.
• Central banks, international regulatory standards, and remittances.
• War on terror, western hegemonic powers, and (in)formal remittances.
• Financial surveillance and remittances ecosystems.
• Anti-money laundering/countering terrorist financing and (in)formal remittances.
• International anti-terrorism standards and diaspora humanitarianism and remittances.
• Sanctions as a form of regulation: remittances, international sanctions regime, and migrant communities.
• Diasporas and regulatory regimes in the Western countries.
• De-banking, de-risking, know-your-customer, customer due diligence, and its impact on diaspora communities and their remittances.
• Money transfer agencies and global regulatory regimes.

These are some of the topics that we would like to entertain at the JUSTREMIT2023 conference, but we welcome all other relevant papers and panel proposals that speak to global regulatory regimes and remittances.

Submissions

We invite papers and proposals from academics, practitioners from the regulatory sector, as well as representatives from international financial institutions. Please send a short abstract (maximum 350 words maximum) of your paper/presentation to [e-mail] before 18 September 2023.

JUSTREMIT

JUSTREMIT is an ERC-funded project that brings together political theory, ethnography, and security studies in an interdisciplinary study of remittances and global justice.

Hybrid conference

The conference will be hybrid: Online via Zoom, in Leiden and in The Hague, The Netherlands. The first day (12th October) will be at the Leiden University African Studies Centre in Leiden, while the second day (13th October) will be at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs in The Hague. We aim to organise the conference without parallel sessions so all participants can engage and contribute. There will be keynote speeches and a concluding roundtable.
