Making laboratories more sustainable with a Kiem Grant

At a celebratory event, 26 projects received a €10,000 Kiem grant for 2026-2027. One of these projects is titled ‘Our laboratories are going green’. A remarkable, interfaculty collaboration of (bio)chemical labs at Science, Archaeology, and the LUMC aims at making the labs more sustainable.

Energy and waste

(Bio)chemical labs use a lot of energy and produce a lot of waste. Although many researchers and students would like to conduct their research in the most environmentally friendly way possible, this is not yet a common method.

The Leiden Institute of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science, the Archaeological Sciences Department of the Faculty of Archeology and the Green Labs LUMC would like to bring about change by joining their current expertises and perspectives, by community building and creating awareness, by making use of LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework), by purchasing more environmentally friendly small equipment, and by using the new insights for future grant applications and education. At the Faculty of Archaeology this project is headed by Rebecca van der Ham.

New tools and equipment

The Kiem Grant will help these labs to acquire new tools and equipment to facilitate working more sustainably.

The goal is to reach a LEAF bronze accreditation in the fall of 2026. We will continue to follow these developments.
