Strive for a good work balance, use your leave hours

13 June 2023

Leiden University strives for a pleasant, healthy and inclusive learning and working climate; in which you feel free to express yourself, dare to give your (diverging) opinion; in which everyone's opinion is heard and taken seriously and where differences in experience and perspective are recognised.

Working from this ‘climate goal’, Leiden University and the faculties are working on several projects, some of which are supervised by the HR team. One of these is promoting good work balance. A point of attention that also emerged from the personnel monitor.

Work balance
Last week, every employee received an email about 'leave' from the University's PSSC Service Point. The message was intended to encourage you to make use of your annual statutory as well as non-statutory leave which is conducive to a good work balance as well as your health. Not all hours are used up and there are several reasons for this.

Agreements
Which is why we, as HR team at Leiden Law School, would like to emphasise the importance of taking the time with your manager to discuss your work schedule as well as your ‘leave history’. This can be done during your Annual Meeting with your manager, for example, but you are also free to schedule a meeting at another date.

Discussion aid
Do you find it difficult to discuss such matters with your manager? You can make use of the free conversational skills coaching, which teaches you techniques for getting your message across clearly through 1-on-1 coaching in just 2 hours.

Questions about your leave hours

With a 38-hour working week, you have 232 holiday hours per year. If you make use of the flexible working hours option, you will have more or fewer holiday hours. For part-timers the accrual is proportional to the size of the employment. More information
