GenAI in education: what’s the situation at FGGA?
The rapid rise of GenAI raises many questions about teaching and assessment: students and teachers need clarity, while developments are taking place at both programme and university level. To provide direction in this, the Faculty Board has recently adopted the framework document An FGGA approach to GenAI in Education, which sets out the key principles, expectations, and responsibilities regarding GenAI in education.
For teachers, there are three key takeaways:
- FGGA places trust in teachers’ professional judgement, within a framework of principles such as assessment validity and transparency, together with further alignment at programme level.
- Teachers make clear, per course and per assessment, what is and is not permitted and why, in order to limit uncertainty and inequality for students. Starting next academic year, the FGGA student guidelines, which are available via Brightspace in every course, will include a Scale for permitted AI use, helping to communicate this more concretely.
- We do not treat 'no AI' as the unspoken default, but instead choose clear communication about expectations and transparency about use as the norm.
To support teachers, various resources are being developed and offered. The FGGA Teachers Platform provides an overview of resources for support and inspiration, rules and guidelines, and other relevant information. There are also options for individual consultations. Finally, LUChat, a secure and private GenAI environment developed in collaboration with the ISSC, has recently become available for staff and is expected to become available for students from the coming academic year as well.
