Kilometre allowance increased for business trips and individual choices model

13 July 2026

Applying retrospectively from 1 January 2026, the kilometre allowance for domestic and international business travel has increased from €0.23 to €0.25 per kilometre . The kilometre allowance under the individual choices model has also increased to €0.25 per kilometre.

Allowance adjusted automatically

The increase will be processed in BAS InSite this month and will be paid out with your July salary. Please note that in Shuttel, you will see the allowance of €0.25 for your entries from 1 June 2026 onwards. For the period from 1 January to 1 June 2026, the old sum of €0.23 will remain visible in Shuttel due to technical limitations.

Commuting allowance remains unchanged

The commuting allowance remains unchanged at €0.07 per kilometre, with a maximum of 45 kilometres one way, and does not apply to the first 10 kilometres. This remains unchanged because the university wants to continue encouraging staff to travel more sustainably. It therefore covers the full cost of commuting by public transport.

Why is the kilometre allowance being increased?

The Junior Minister for Finance has increased the maximum tax-free kilometre allowance. This is because of the rise in fuel and energy prices resulting from recent developments in the Middle East. The government is implementing this measure to help households with the cost of living. Employers are not obliged to adopt this increase. Leiden University has chosen to do so to ensure that the allowance for business travel reflects the costs incurred.
