Read & Publish agreement with the American Chemical Society concluded after lengthy negotiations
The new Read & Publish agreement with the American Chemical Society has been concluded after lengthy negotiations. It took effect on 1 July 2026. This means that the costs to publish articles in open access in journals of this publisher is covered for articles accepted between 1 July 2026 and December 2028.
Leiden Journal Browser
The Leiden Journal Browser lists all journals covered by the new agreement. It also provides details and the most important conditions for journals covered by agreements with different publishers.
Transition from the previous to the new agreement
The negotiations with the American Chemical Society (ACS) took six months longer than the runtime of the previous agreement. The Article Processing Charges (APCs) for articles accepted by ACS between 1 January 2026 and 30 June 2026 are therefore not covered by any agreement. The costs for APCs in that period will be charged to authors directly. The new agreement does not include an option to have these costs reimbursed. Authors with questions about this, can contact the UBL Open Access Team via openaccess@library.leidenuniv.nl.

Information about all Read & Publish agreements can be found on the open access-page of our website. Please note: for some agreements a ‘cap’ is in place, a maximum number of articles for which the APC is covered by the agreement. We expect to reach the cap for some of these agreements after the summer. To stay updated about these developments, regularly check our website or sign up for the ‘Notify-me service’.
