Join a trade union by the end of October and get a reduced membership fee

6 October 2026

As a staffmember of Leiden University, you can join AOb or FNV at a reduced rate until the end of October. In your first year, you will receive a refund of half of your membership fee, up to a maximum of €100.

What can a trade union do for you?

The trade unions AOb and FNV represent the interests of employees and negotiate the Collective Labour Agreement (CLA) for Dutch Universities on behalf of employees. As a member, you can get advice and support with questions about your work and employment conditions, or help if you have a conflict at work.

You can also have a say in CLA agreements and make use of career advice, help with your tax return, and discounts on products and services, such as energy and courses.

With more members, trade unions can also work more effectively to promote good employment conditions and a safe working environment.

So there is an extra reason to join now and benefit from all the advantages of trade union membership! Take a look at the websites of the three unions active at Leiden University: AOb, FNV and CNV.

Please note: If you want to have your trade union membership fee deducted through the flexible benefits scheme, you cannot include the amount of the refund in this calculation.

For example: your annual trade union membership fee is €300. You have received a refund of €100. You can then claim €200 (€300 - €100) through the flexible benefits scheme.

Read here how you can have the costs of your trade union membership deducted through the Terms of Employment Individual Choices Model.
