Copyright and Open Access for PhDs

Once you start publishing your academic work, elementary knowledge on copyright and licensing is essential in dealing with publishers and choosing open access. This course introduces the basics of copyright and Leiden University's open access requirements.

  • introduction to copyright; 
  • plagiarism, what it is and how to avoid it;
  • pitfalls in publishing agreements;
  • open access publishing routes; 
  • Leiden University's open access policy;
  • funders' open access requirements;
  • copyright and reuse of materials in education.

What you will learn

This course will enable you to gain insight in the what, where and how of copyright and Open Access, so you will be able to avoid pitfalls and make full use of your rights as an author and scholar.

Target audience

This course is aimed at PhD researchers, who will be about to publish their first academic works in the course of their PhD trajectory. All others who want to attend should contact the course organisers.

Format

One session of up to 2 hours with presentations and ample time for questions. Afterwards, participants will receive the course materials with links to additional information and tools.

PhD researchers affiliated with Leiden University can register free of charge by emailing the course organisers: auteursrecht@library.leidenuniv.nl. Any others can enquire about participation through the same email address.
