Just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin began his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union tried to ramp up pressure on Russia by slapping sanctions on the country. Since then, the EU has passed 16 rounds of sanctions, and is expected to agree on its next one later this month. The measures range from freezing assets of individuals to banning the import of Russian oil. But who in the EU actually decides what gets sanctioned when, and how does that whole process work? And how can journalists help hold the EU to account when it gets things wrong?
In this talk, journalist Leonie Kijewski provides insights into what lessons can be learned from the past few years, and what to expect going forward.
