Our expectations shape our experiences to a significant extent: a kiss from a parent on a bruised knee can make pain disappear in an instant, while negative lifestyle advice on social media can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Expectations can also reinforce inequality, for example when it comes to opportunities in education or access to healthcare. At the same time, they can be used to help people exceed their own expectations, adopt healthier behaviours, or achieve more positive treatment outcomes.

During this LHSC Knowledge Café, we will reflect on the lessons learned and future perspectives inspired by the work of Professor Andrea Evers, who sadly passed away unexpectedly last year, and discuss both the opportunities and possible limitations of harnessing the power of expectations.
