What happens when following orders means becoming responsible for the suffering of others?

The Film The Red Hangar takes us into Chile during the 1973 military coup, where Captain Jorge Silva, head of the Air Force Academy, is ordered to transform his military training camp into a prison camp.

Faced with an impossible choice, Silva must decide whether to follow orders and accept the consequences for others or resist, putting his own life at risk. The Red Hangar explores the complex power structures within the military establishment, where responsibility, guilt and obedience are rarely straightforward.

For the October 9 screening by Leiden International Film Festival, the film will be introduced by Daniela Vicherat Mattar, Associate Professor of Sociology at Leiden University. Her academic work is closely connected to Chile, including research on the massive social protests that began in October 2019, known as the Estallido Social. This special introduction is presented in collaboration with LeidenGlobal.
